‘Hope in the Wind’ Trafficking Awareness & Prevention Project

JANUARY PROCLAIMED AS NATIONAL SLAVERY AND HUMAN TRAFFICKING PREVENTION MONTH

The Sexual Assault Resource Center (SARC) is honored to present our first annual Trafficking Awareness & Prevention Project. The goal of the project is to increase awareness about human trafficking in our community and around the world. This year’s theme is based on the tradition of the Tibetan Prayer flag and we need YOU to help us!

Here is how you can help:

1) Decorate a blank flag and send it back to us. We are inviting you to join us in creating prayer flags. All of the decorated flags will be strung together and displayed in Portland’s City Hall between January 7 – January 30th, 2015.

To participate in flag decoration, please email us your mailing address and the number of flags you want to decorate at SarcHTAM[at]Gmail.com. We will send you a blank muslin flag and a return envelope. We encourage you to be creative and embellish the flag any way you like. There is no cost to request and decorate flags, but please return your decorated flag in the enclosed by December 31st, 2014.

2) Buy a decorated flag on Facebook or in-person at the Closing Reception
As flags are returned to us, we will post them on our Facebook page for sale.

3) Make a donation:
Your helpful donations assist in the elimination of sexual exploitation of children.
To make a donation, please use PayPal via our website: sarcoregon.org

Closing Reception: January 30th, from 4-6pm at Portland’s City Hall
We invite you to attend the Closing Reception. Admission to the reception is free but we encourage those attending to purchase flags or donate generously to SARC.

Good Times Raising Awareness at Lola’s Room

SARC benefit concert

Thanks to everyone who came out to the benefit concert, we had a great time! We wanted to offer a good mix of music in the line-up and offer a nice variety to appeal to the audience. Raising awareness was our #1 goal. We had the opportunity to share what and who SARC is and speak about our causes along with a slideshow.

As our first concert, we are proud to have held the event and couldn’t have done so without the help of many folks. It all started with the McMenamins family with their generosity and commitment to the community and so, the search was on for bands. A bonus was Pixxl PDX who set up their photo style booth with fun props where we had SARC specific signs to throw into the mix.

View photos from the show here >>

All musicians were (and are) so sweet and gracious, it warms our hearts.
The crew at McMenamins–they know what they’re doing.

We hope you enjoyed the show! We rely on members of the community like you to help keep SARC available to those in need.

Support the great musicians who came out in support of SARC and thanks all for coming out to the show! We’d love to hear from you. Let us know on any feedback so we can make it even more successful next time. We hope to make it our annual fundraiser event.

Much love and gratitude goes to:

BENEFIT CONCERT: Raise Your Voice fundraiser event of the year

We are so excited to invite you all to this inaugural benefit concert event. This concert is an attempt at being the largest fundraiser for SARC this year. In prior years, our annual event has been the WAM walk and we were looking to do a different event.

With the generous donation of McMenamins venue Lola’s Room we’ve put together a great lineup of local acts who are all stepping up to help raise our voices for SARC. In addition to four great acts we have some great raffle prizes planned. Stay tuned for updates on further developments.

Here is the show flyer as a PDF which you can please share and distribute at-will. We thank Christine Ellsworth of Broken 1 Design, who created the flyer and is doing some great design work for SARC (more on that later!)

Here’s a little bit about the bands.

Tiburones

Headlining the show will be Tiburones, named after the spanish word for sharks. They are an up and coming band that was named one of this year’s best new bands by Willamette Week. They’ve been working on their debut album and are working on its release. Not strangers to the Portland music scene, the band leads are in other well known projects like Y La Bamba and Shaky Hands. Vibrant sounds delivered by an intoxicating 6-piece with enchanting harmonies, syncopated percussion, electric guitars, bass, and keys. “TIburones frames the sound of folk with big, heavy rhythms and songs that split the sea.”

SupraphonicsSupraphonics brings a blend of funk, soul, and nu-jazz originals and covers from a group of veteran Portland musicians. All members are deeply rooted in old school grooves like James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and Al Green but offer original music with a modern twist. A lot of soul, funk, afro-beat fusion for your listening pleasure! Check them out here.

RllrbllRLLRBLL has been an established band since 1994. Having since released over 10 full length albums and many more EP’s and singles, many often wonder ‘which Rllrbll’ will play tonight?
They will bring their dueling male-female vocal harmonies and strong bass and piano driven rifts. Listen here.

Little-WarriorAlexa Raquel Casciato, of Little Warrior says  that the term “Little Warrior” references someone who appears small in day-to-day life, but is really fighting a battle towards good. Well we love that! She is a Little Warrior with a big voice and she couldn’t be happier to be a part of the cause. All songs are composed, programmed and produced, mixed and mastered by the warrior herself, Alexa.
Listen to her recently released album.

A HUGE THANK YOU to McMenamins and all the great musicians stepping up. Show your support of community businesses like McMenamins and these great local bands!

Their tunes can be purchased online and at the show.
